Get ready to be inspired! From September 21 to 27, the OCBC Aquatic Centre is set to become the epicenter of global para-sports. For the first time ever, Singapore is hosting the World Para Swimming Championships, bringing together over 600 of the world's most talented para-athletes from 60 countries. This is more than just a swim meet; it's a testament to the power of the human spirit and the culmination of years of relentless dedication.
What to Expect: A Gathering of Champions
The World Para Swimming Championships is the highest-ranked para-swimming competition outside of the Paralympic Games. This event is a crucial stepping stone for athletes, many of whom are coming directly from the recent Paris 2024 Paralympics. You will witness top athletes and rising stars battling for glory and fine-tuning their skills on the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Games. This is a rare opportunity to see some of the world’s most extraordinary athletes pushing boundaries and redefining excellence on a global stage, right here in Singapore.
Spotlight on a Local Legend: Yip Pin Xiu

The heart of the competition for many local spectators will be cheering on Singapore's very own national hero, Yip Pin Xiu. A Paralympic legend with a staggering medal count, this will be her first time defending her world titles on home soil. Yip has spoken about the unique and powerful "home-ground advantage" she experienced during the 2015 ASEAN Para Games. As she heads into what could be her final major competition in Singapore, she’s counting on the energy and support of the local crowd to give her that extra boost. Your presence in the stands will make all the difference to her and her fellow Team Singapore athletes.
Beyond the Medals: Understanding the Sport
Para-swimming is an incredibly fair and competitive sport thanks to its unique classification system. This system groups athletes into classes based on their functional ability, ensuring that the focus is on skill, fitness, and tactical ability, not the nature of their impairment.
There are three main categories:
Physical Impairments (S1-S10): The lower the number, the more significant the physical challenge. An S1 athlete might have severe muscle weakness, while an S10 athlete could have a hand amputation.
Visual Impairments (S11-S13): Swimmers with visual impairments are grouped based on their level of sight. S11 swimmers, who are blind, wear blackened goggles and rely on "tappers" to signal when they are approaching the wall.
Intellectual Impairments (S14): This class is for swimmers with intellectual disabilities that impact their performance.
This system creates a level playing field and allows you to appreciate the incredible technique and power of each athlete. You'll witness the inspiring journeys of athletes from around the globe, like the American veteran Jessica Long, who has a remarkable 54 career world championship medals, and Australia's Alexa Leary, a rising star who continues to break records.
